About the Project
Created collaboratively by students in Introduction to Women’s Studies, this exhibit brings together analyses of film, news, advertising, video games, music and celebrity culture, and sports media. Each project reflects students’ own choices of media texts, interpretations, and visual design.
01Project Purpose
Seeing Gender invites students to examine how media representation shapes what audiences notice, value, and understand about gender. Working with paired media examples, students consider what media chooses to emphasize, what becomes visible or overlooked, and how those choices influence the way people and characters are understood.
02How Students Created the Exhibit
Students worked in groups to select two media examples connected by a shared question about gender representation. They researched the context of each example, wrote their own analyses and comparisons, and sketched how they wanted their exhibit pages to look. Their written content, media choices, and design ideas were then translated into the digital exhibit, with students given opportunities to clarify or revise their work before publication.
03About the Course
WS 200: Introduction to Women’s Studies introduces students to the study of gender, power, representation, and inequality across everyday life, culture, and institutions. Throughout the course, students practice using feminist concepts to analyze contemporary media and social issues, moving from understanding key ideas to applying them independently to new examples.
